Buying Furniture Online: Measure First, Compare the Full Cost
By Shopping.us Editorial Team · Updated
A desk or bookcase can look right in a photograph and still be wrong for your room. Before comparing furniture offers, write down the space available, how you will use the piece and the maximum amount you want to spend after delivery and assembly. Treat product photographs as a starting point; the dimensions, construction details and seller's terms are what make the purchase assessable.
Measure the room and the space needed to use it
Record the available width, depth and height, then mark the proposed footprint with removable tape or paper. Open nearby doors and drawers and try the space with your existing furniture. The product's footprint alone does not account for a chair pulled out from a desk or the space needed to walk around a dining table.
For a desk, check the usable work surface, the space underneath for your legs and chair, and the position of shelves or drawers. Include monitor stands, cables and the equipment you actually use. For a console table or bookcase, account for baseboards, sockets and the location of any manufacturer-required installation hardware.
Read the dimension drawing for the exact model and variant. Overall width is different from shelf width, knee clearance or drawer depth. If a measurement you need is missing, ask the retailer before ordering.
Check the delivery route and package size
Measure the route from the delivery point to the room: door openings, stairs, tight corners and any elevator. Compare it with the shipping-carton dimensions as well as the assembled dimensions. A flat-pack item may be easier to move, but do not assume every furniture listing ships flat.
Find out where the carrier leaves the packages. Doorstep delivery, room-of-choice delivery and installation are different services. Confirm the number and weight of cartons, whether assistance is needed and whether apartment stairs or limited access change the charges.
Check whether the item is in stock or a preorder and read the delivery estimate for your address. A general free-shipping statement does not establish coverage for every location or include assembly.
Compare the construction details
Look for a specific material description rather than relying on terms such as wood finish or rustic. Solid wood, veneer over a core and a printed or laminated surface describe different constructions. Check the frame and shelves separately; the top and base may use different materials.
Compare stated load limits for the intended use. A per-shelf limit is different from the total capacity of a bookcase, and a desk surface may have its own limit. Follow the exact product's assembly, installation and use instructions rather than inferring strength from photographs.
Check the finish, edge treatment, hardware and care guidance. Photos taken in different lighting can make colors look different. Ask for additional detail or a sample where available if matching existing furniture is essential.
Plan assembly before checkout
Read the assembly instructions before buying when the retailer provides them. Identify the required tools, number of people and approximate space needed to unpack and build the piece. Confirm what hardware and tools are included; do not treat an assembly-time estimate as a guarantee.
Check whether instructions specify securing the piece to a wall and whether the required hardware is included or depends on your wall construction. Follow those instructions; seek appropriate installation help when needed. Do not substitute a furniture buying guide for the manufacturer's installation directions.
Include paid assembly or installation in your budget if you will need it. Confirm who provides the service, what it covers and whether packaging removal is included. Keep the model information and instructions for future moves or replacement-part requests.
Work out the cost of keeping it—and returning it
Compare the item price plus shipping, tax, delivery upgrades, required hardware and assembly. A hypothetical $180 desk with $25 delivery and $60 assembly costs $265 before tax. A $220 desk with free delivery and the same $60 assembly costs $280 before tax. These examples show the arithmetic; they are not retailer offers or estimates.
Before ordering, check the return window, when it starts, and whether assembled furniture can be returned. Ask who pays return freight, whether original delivery charges are refunded, whether a restocking fee applies and whether the original packaging is required. Change-of-mind returns can have different rules from damaged or incorrect deliveries.
Keep the packaging until you have inspected the item and decided to keep it. If something arrives damaged or a part is missing, follow the seller's reporting procedure promptly and retain photographs and order details. Confirm any reporting deadline rather than assuming it matches the general return window.
Compare exact configurations, then decide
Match dimensions, material, color, package contents and included services before calling one offer cheaper. A smaller desk or a two-shelf version is a different product, even when the listing name looks similar.
