RETAILER RESEARCH
How to Evaluate an Online Retailer
Price matters, but the seller is part of the purchase. A retailer evaluation should cover fulfillment, returns, warranty support and the identity of the actual seller.
Identify who is selling the item
A marketplace may host both its own inventory and third-party sellers. Confirm the seller name and fulfillment method before comparing the offer with a direct retailer.
For higher-value purchases, seller reputation and warranty eligibility can materially affect the risk of the transaction.
Read the return policy for the specific product
Retailers sometimes apply different return rules to electronics, clearance items, oversized products, opened goods or marketplace purchases.
Check the return window, condition requirements, restocking fees and who pays return shipping.
Check support after the sale
For products likely to need warranty service, confirm whether support comes from the retailer, manufacturer or a third party.
A slightly higher purchase price can be reasonable when it comes with materially better support or a clearer return path.
